VS1 vs VS2 Diamond Clarity

Two Radiant Cut Diamonds on a Hand

The terminology in the diamond industry can make shopping for a quality gem confusing. Diamond cuts. Diamond carats. And one of the most important when it comes to value — diamond clarity. But it doesn't have to be.

Once you understand the basics, you’ll be able to make a choice that fits your budget, style, and love story. In this article, we’re simplifying clarity and breaking down the two most common grades you’ll come across when shopping for a diamond.

What is Diamond Clarity?

Diamond clarity is how gemologists measure the inclusions or blemishes of a diamond. Think of them as character traits that make each diamond unique. The lower or higher clarity grade is solely based on these “character traits.”

Most people are looking for a flawless grade or at least a level of clarity that looks flawless to the naked eye. That’s what we call eye-clean (more diamond jargon), which is where both VS1 and VS2 fall on the clarity scale. This is where you’ll start to see terms like “slightly included” or “very slightly included,” which simply means how visible the inclusions and blemishes are.

Here’s what that can look like:

  • FL: Flawless

  • IF: Internally Flawless

  • VVS1-VVS2: Very, Very, Slightly Included

  • VS1-VS2: Very Slightly Included

  • SI1-SI2: Slightly Included

VS1 vs VS2 Diamond Clarity: The Difference

If both VS1 and VS2 clarity pass the “eye-clean” test, what makes them different? Here’s the breakdown.

What is a VS1 diamond?

VS1 clarity means there are very small inclusions that are visible under 10x magnification. This requires a skilled grader to even notice these imperfections.

What is a VS2 diamond?

VS2 clarity has slightly more noticeable inclusions, but these “character traits” are still not visible to the untrained eye.

This means that both are eye-clean and even with diamond cuts as high as 2.5 carats, the inclusions aren’t noticeable. So, which clarity grade should you choose? If you want to stick to a certain budget while getting the most clarity possible, VS2 might be the best choice for you. In some cases, you get the same level of beauty and clarity for a lower price due to more inclusions. If you’re looking to go bigger than 2.5 carats or simply want the most flawless options, a VS1 will give you the clarity you’re looking for.

But it’s important to remember that you don’t need flawless clarity to get a stunning stone.

VS1 Clarity vs VS2 Clarity: What Really Matters

Before you find yourself squinting as you try to compare the minor differences between a VS1 and VS2 diamond, understand that there are other things to consider when assessing clarity. Whether you’re shopping for your dream engagement ring or treating yourself to a sentimental jewelry piece, here’s what to look for to shop for diamonds confidently.

  • Diamond Inclusions: VS1 and VS2 are considered “Very Slightly Included,” so either choice would be great if you’re looking for a quality diamond with few inclusions.

  • Diamond Size and Shape: This is when you can start to see the difference between VS1 clarity and VS2 clarity. The larger the diamond, the more visible inclusions can become. This also impacts shape, as different cuts can expose more imperfections.

  • Diamond Setting Style: The setting you choose can either conceal or highlight the inclusions in the diamond. Settings like halo and bezel are known to conceal inclusions, while solitaire diamond settings may highlight them more.

What about lab grown diamonds vs natural diamond clarity?

The same scales, strict criteria, and the same gemological labs grade lab grown diamonds and natural diamonds. A VS1 lab grown diamond is held to the same standard as a VS1 natural diamond. So when you shop lab grown diamond options, you’re getting the same level of clarity, just without the environmental baggage.

When it comes down to which is best, both VS1 and VS2 offer beautiful clarity with the sparkle that we’ve all come to love about diamonds. The difference is so small that the deciding factor is how the diamond looks in the size, shape, and setting style you want.

At Plum Diamonds, clarity applies to more than our collection of lab grown diamond engagement rings and jewelry. Whether you choose a VS1 or VS2, we lead with the full transparency that each of our diamonds are ethically made, beautifully crafted, and will shine for a lifetime.
